Theatre Services
Numurkah District Health Service is dedicated to offering the public elective surgery procedures across a range of specialties. A new theatre earmarked for construction as part of Stage 2 of the whole-of-site redevelopment will ensure we maintain the range of surgery options currently available.
Operating Days
Tuesday and Thursdays are operating days, and the waiting list for surgery is usually only one to two months.
Types of Surgery
The range of surgery performed at Numurkah District Health Service includes:
- General surgery: hernia repairs, varicose vein removal, carpal tunnel release, skin cancer removal and biopsy
- Cosmetic surgery: breast reductions and abdominoplasty
- Gynaecological surgery: hysterectomy, dilatation and curettage of the cervix, laparoscopy and vasectomy
The surgical equipment we bought in 2005 – 2006 includes a colonoscope, a gastroscope and a theatre table.
Theatre Staff
There are four members of nursing staff in the theatre: a scrub nurse; a scout nurse; a nurse to assist the anaesthetist; and a recovery nurse. As is common in small rural hospitals, each of the nurses works across other areas of the Health Service.
Anaesthetic services are provided to Numurkah District Health Service through the Goulburn Valley Anaesthetic Group in Shepparton.
Surgeons
Visiting gynaecologists, general surgeons and anaesthetists from Shepparton provide services to Numurkah District Health Service.
Patient Satisfaction
Theatre staff undertake regular patient satisfaction surveys. In 2005/2006 theatre patients were 100 percent satisfied with the surgery booking in process, discharge information and theatre services in general.
Patients felt that the GP and the nurse gave the best explanation of their surgery. Only 23 percent of patients felt that their surgeon gave the best explanation of their surgery.
