Employment Opportunities

Staff Recruitment and Retention

Numurkah District Health Service is a “No Lift” and Smoke Free Campus.

  • Valuable employment and career opportunities exist throughout our service. A position with the Numurkah District Health Service offers the attractive combination of working in a progressive health service while enjoying the lifestyle opportunities available in a regional setting.

Like many regional organisations, Numurkah District Health Service works hard to attract specialist staff to improve the accessibility and breadth of our services.

In clinical areas, the challenge of attracting specialist staff has been exacerbated by an industry-wide shortage of practitioners in key disciplines and specialties.

Amid many other disciplines, during 2005/2006 the Service provided medical training to medical students – a valuable opportunity for trainees to experience regional health in action and for the Service to promote the benefits of working in the country.

    Education and Training

During the year 2,350.5 hours of leave were provided to the staff of Numurkah District Health Service to attend in-house or external training courses, to study or attend conferences.

    Graduate Nurse Program

Numurkah District Health Service’s Graduate Nurse Program provides a supportive environment for student nurses to gain clinical experience while making the transition to registered nursing.

In 2005, two graduate nurses participated in the Graduate Nurse Program.

    Occupational Health and Safety

Numurkah District Health Service’s commitment to providing a safe, clean working environment for its employees was reflected this year in the development of new training programs, including:

    • No Lift training
    • Patient and client aggression management
    • Bullying and harassment education

General health and wellbeing of staff is also supported through programs such as the annual Fluvax campaign, with 76 staff receiving a free vaccination over the past 12 months.

Specific health and safety strategies cover:

    • The highest standards of welfare and injury management
    • Injury prevention and management strategies
    • Occupational health and safety initiatives across all business operations and systems

Numurkah District Health Service has achieved a 30% reduction in standard Workcover claims over the past 12 months, with a total of 7 workcover claims in 2005/2006 compared to 10 claims in 2004/05.  This year there were 249.50 hours time lost to injuries.

    No-Lift training

The no-lift training program was introduced to reduce the incidence of back injuries and provide safer lifting practices. The program has been further supported in the high care facility Karinya, where an overhead tracking system to assist staff to transfer patients safely was installed.

    Driver Safety Training

Driver safety training has been provided to all staff who regularly use vehicles from the Numurkah District Health Service fleet. Defensive driving education has been undertaken.
